In a statement released by the Georgia Football Association, Georgia athletics director Brian Davis said coach Mike Leach was fired for “neglect and insubordination.”
Davis said in a statement that the allegations against Leach are “deeply concerning” and that the actions of the two individuals involved are not consistent with Georgia Athletics and its values.
“Coach Leach is deeply disappointed and saddened by the allegations that have been made against him and the actions he has taken,” Davis said.
“Coach Leaches actions during the past few days have been completely unacceptable and contrary to the values we espouse at Georgia Athletics.”
Leach was named Georgia coach last week.
His departure comes two days after the NCAA announced it was investigating allegations against his program.
Georgia athletic director Mike Davis said the allegations were “deep and disturbing” and are “contradicting Georgia Athletics values” in a release Tuesday.
Leach is set to meet with the NCAA later Tuesday.
He was fired Tuesday.
“The allegations against Coach Leach were deeply concerning, and they are contrary to Georgia Athletics’ values,” Davis wrote in the statement.
“As Georgia Athletics leaders, we have taken these allegations seriously, and Coach Leaches dismissal is a devastating blow to our program.”
Leaches attorney, Michael Smith, said his client was not aware of the video until Wednesday morning.
He said he is concerned about Leach’s future at the school, which he left after the 2017 season.
“Coach Leached was an exceptional coach who built a program that has been successful for more than two decades,” Smith said.
